agchouston.org Spring2025Cornerstone3 F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T / C E O Kyle Holland President/CEO, AGC Houston I N FEBRUARY, WE HELD OUR 2025 Annual Chapter Meeting, which brought more than 300 AGC Hous- ton members together to connect, hear from our new board chair, recognize several award recipients and honor our Leadership AGC graduating class of 2024. Oh yeah — and they also got to hear from an awesome keynote speaker (more on that in a bit). The Annual Meeting is one of my favorite events of the year for a variety of reasons, but I’m always amazed and impressed with the “buzz” the morn- ing of the meeting. Anytime you bring 300 people together in one place, there will be a lot of conversation, but it just feels different at this event. It’s hard to describe, but if you were there, you definitely know what I mean. Ironically, that buzz makes it difficult to plan the logistics for the meeting to stay on schedule — which is a very good problem to have. Our team knows we need to get started with breakfast and the meeting, but it’s always so hard to cut off the awesome networking that happens before! We recognize that those conversations are a priority for most folks coming out to that meeting, and we want to give the people what they want! This year’s meeting was also particu- larly interesting because several elements tied together, starting with board chair Jeremy Stovall’s remarks focusing on the great people in our industry. That carried into the recognition of some awesome people, with our Standard of Excellence award winner, Wes Juergen with Austin Commercial, and our William H. Scott III Volunteer of the Year Award winner, Richard Weinstein with Hilb Group. Jeremy’s remarks also touched on his goals for his term as chair, such as continuing to develop the future leaders of our industry, which was showcased when we recognized our 2024 Leader- ship AGC Class for their participation in the program. It’s hard to believe that the program has been around for over a decade and that it continues to be one of our chapter’s most impactful. It was also special to have Bill Scott, former two-time AGC board chair, in attendance. Not only is our Volunteer of the Year Award named after him, but it was also during his time as chair that our emphasis on our young leaders first began — and ultimately when Leader- ship AGC was born. Two board chairs, serving over a decade apart, with a similar focus for impact with our chapter ... we’ve seen the impact that’s had on our young leaders over the last decade, as many have now risen into key leadership roles with their companies. It’s exciting to think what the impact over the next decade will be. Oh, and then there was the keynote speaker I mentioned earlier! In addition to everything else they got out of our Annual Meeting, members in attendance got to hear an awesome keynote speech about generational motivation. A writ- ten summary of the presentation would never do it justice, but I got a ton of com- ments from folks about how insightful it was and how excited they were to take the information back to their teams. Gordon Fowler with 3fold Com- munications shared how — with five generations present in the workplace — everyone (leaders, managers, team members, etc.) must understand what drives each generation. Everything each generation has been through in their lives has shaped how they think and react today, from historical events and social movements to technology and even fam- ily dynamics. It seems so obvious to say, “Of course, everyone needs to be treated differently to be effective working together,” but if it was that obvious, why would the inter-generational dynamics be so challenging?! Often, we forget to think about why people act the way they do, but when we better understand others’ perspectives, it will only help us work together. That’s so relevant in the cur- rent environment, and especially in our industry when we’re focusing on helping young leaders grow and be successful. Jeremy mentioned in his remarks back in February that the 300 people at our Annual Meeting represented AGC Houston’s past, present and future — many generations of AGC leadership and many generations of AGC membership. We are all different, yet all so very similar in our constant and unwavering support of AGC Houston. That is what makes AGC truly special!
