to a Swiss watch: perfection in time-prov- en methods. These products that still rev- olutionize locking technology are now created by computer-controlled and net- work production processes in one of the world’s most up-to-date manufacturing systems for locking devices. It’s no won- der that Kaba has remained one of the premier lock manufacturers in the world. Peaks Product Overview Figure 4. The new 2015 Peaks Preferred SFIC is available capped or slide cover, as pictured here. The new 2015 Peaks mortise cylinder — both Classic 3401 and 8401 Preferred — are available in 13 scalp finishes, all at the same price point. The scalps will be stamped either “Peaks Classic” or “Peaks Preferred” on the face for positive identifi- cation. Both use the J pins from the Peaks pinning kit. These changes also hold true for the Peaks Classic 3402 rim cylinder and the 8402 Preferred rim cylinder. Peaks mortise cylinders now have a tenon in the rear to drive the cam, have a 3-48 larger head cam screws (866B) to hold more securely and resist shearing off, allow for 17 cam configurations and have stronger, more stable cams with only two holes for screws. Additionally, the Peaks rim cylinders now have a screw cap designed to better retain the plug and tailpieces. Tailpieces are available in both rigid and lost motion. And, to better serve locksmiths, Peaks key blanks are available for quick ship within five busi- ness days. Within the next year, the KIK cylinders will be redesigned to all use the J bottom pins within the full-size diam- eter plugs. This will add consistency to the three fixed cylinder platforms within the Peaks line. All in all, great improve- ments to a great product line. This chart gives an overview of the Peaks product line. Peaks Mechanical Overview The Kaba Peaks product line spans three specific categories: Peaks Classic, Peaks Global and Peaks Preferred. The Kaba Peaks Classic line was developed from the previously existing Kaba Gemini line and was introduced in 1990. The inven- tor of the Peaks concept was the well-re- spected inventor and lock historian Tom Hennessey. The Kaba Peaks Classic line was the first retrofit system to be able to inter- key conventional (fixed) cylinders, large format retrofit Yale, Corbin Russwin, Schlage, Sargent and Medeco cores as well as SFICs (without housing alteration). Its intent was to introduce a patented key control product without the need for ex- pensive secondary locking mechanisms within the cylinders. Thus, Kaba was the first in the United States to do so. Figure 6. The Kaba Peaks Classic line was the first retrofit system to be able to interkey conventional (fixed) cylinders, large format retrofit Yale, Corbin Russwin, Schlage, Sargent and Medeco cores as well as SFICs (without housing alteration). The beauty of this system was that one needn’t know the keying procedures for each of those manufacturers, but instead rely only on a single, simple, easy-to- understand keying procedure that uses small format IC principles. The small “peaks” on the top and the bottom of the patented key protects the cylinder from unauthorized operation, and all products within the Peaks 140 family can easily be used with a single key. The Kaba Peaks Global line was intro- duced at the 2004 ALOA Convention & Security Expo in Baltimore. This patent extends through 2023 and includes SF- ICs, incorporating three features: Peaks technology – upper and lower Peaks pins to match the key Pins – engaged by the correct cuts of the patented key Disc technology – discs engaged by the nodes on the side of the patented key WWW.ALOA.ORG With the inclusion of retrofitability, Kaba has become one of the market leaders in high security solutions for end users.
