The simplicity of the building design brought a few challenges to meeting the requirements of the job. The customer was very pleased with the finished installations. Since my initial survey led me to believe we’d be installing surface-mounted vertical rod devices, I didn’t pay close atten- tion to the astragal or its dimensions; it wasn’t important. It became important when we decided to change to rim devices. I should have done a follow-up survey instead of just looking at the pictures I’d taken of the doors. It was a learning experience and a reminder to double-check all aspects of the proposed in- stallation before submitting an estimate or quote. We stuck with our original estimate total since I’d included prices for the other (flat) strikes. I realize that the custom-made brackets took additional time and more material than I’d origi- nally planned for, but the mistake was mine. Actually, Gene re- ally liked designing and manufacturing them. I’m thankful he supplied his photos for this article to explain how he did it. He’s a locksmith and safesmith who thoroughly enjoys the “smith” part! Note: If you have a job that’s a little out of the ordinary, why not share it with the readers of ALOA-SPAI’S Keynotes or SAVTA’s Safe & Vault Technology magazine? Take some photos of the job progress before, during and aſter the work is complete. Write a text account just like you’re telling a story to your buddies. Lock work, safe jobs, automotive work, etc., it’s all fair game. It also puts a nice little paycheck in your pocket. om Gillespie, CML, CIL, CCL, is a 46-year veteran of e security industry.
