ing a number of change keys from that EC system, it is quite possible to decode them for polarity and eventually construct the bitting for the TMK based on what polar- ity exists in each position. To thwart this type of decoding, one can locate an empty chamber/dud posi- tion on the change key when originating that change key. In that place, instead of a dud, insert a magnet of opposite polarity to that which occurs on the TMK in that same position. It will have no effect on the cylinder, as it contains an empty chamber in that position. A key with anything in that position will be irrelevant to that lock’s operation. But, anyone decoding will have one incorrect polarity when trying to re- construct the TMK. If all change keys had this incorrect polarity, decoding by change key commonalities would be ineffective. Conclusions MIWA EC is probably one of the best ways to understand how positional master keying works, because it removes many preconceived notions of key cut depths and adding in master pins to master key cylinders. The magic comes in with rotating the magnetic pins within a cylinder — some chambers filled, others empty. This systematic rotating of active and inactive chambers to match the correctly originated keys is the hallmark of positional master keying. Once we realize that permanent magnets either attract or repel each other, MIWA EC is an easy mechanical system to understand. Perhaps, down the road, this type of product will be reincarnated.
