Ninety percent of car fires are accidental in nature, caused by electrical, fuel or mechanical failures. Many car fires have the potential to be arson in nature, with fraudulent probability due to reasons such as financial motive, mechanical problems, loss of employment or social issues such as divorce. In most instances, the ignition lock cylinder — which normally will fall to the floor from the column due to melting of the lock alloy composition — can be recovered, as it’s protected by other debris that may fall on top of the melted lock cylinder, protecting it from further decomposition. Using layering techniques, the forensic locksmith may be able to recover the actual lock as evidence and retain it for further examination and analysis. In certain year, make and model vehicles, the vehicle computer or vehicle keys can retain memory with such facts as the mileage and date the last time the key was used, and the last key used in the lock prior to the theſt.
